It’s not primacy US should pursue — it’s leadership

It would have been helpful if Stephen Kinzer had distinguished between primacy and leadership in his Oct. 2 op-ed “Pursuit of primacy will be the slow, violent decline of the US.” Clearly he and our current president share similar views about American exceptionalism. I wonder whether Kinzer also believes that America should lead from behind, as President Obama seems to.

From a humanitarian perspective, when the United States does not exercise a leadership role working with its allies, people in Rwanda, Bosnia, and now Syria experience unspeakable hardship and suffering.

Kinzer’s views relating to Russia are similarly naive, as are the president’s. He should be reminded about Crimea, Ukraine, and the current bombing of civilian sites in Aleppo.
