In boosting Boston, Kevin White had a good role model in John Collins

Ira A. Jackson’s account of Mayor Kevin White’s contribution to Boston’s civic, social, and physical blossoming (“The great Boston comeback story,” Opinion, Nov. 2) overlooks the considerable role in energizing Boston that his predecessor, Mayor John F. Collins, played during his two terms from 1960 to 1968. Renewal of the Government Center area, the building of the Prudential Center, and partnership with the civic group called the Vault occurred on Collins’s watch as mayor.

Harvard University recognized Collins’s achievements by conferring upon him an honorary degree with the citation that he “has given the Hub a new spin.” Mayor White had a good role model.
