No, Boston doesn’t need a ‘night mayor’

The Globe proposes a government task force to plan our nighttime and a night life manager to execute the plan (“Boston needs a ‘night mayor,’ ” Editorial, Jan. 1). This would just be one more obtrusive government bureaucracy giving Michelle Wu and the other underemployed city councilors another avenue to tell us how to lead our lives. All we really need is for them to get out of the way. It is government, abetted by Boston’s NIMBY mindset, that restricts restaurant hours, tells us where and when alcohol can be sold and served, and sets up multiple barriers to enjoying live music. Kill the restrictions (while enforcing nuisance laws) and Boston night life will blossom.
