Your editorial “Maine senators fight Trump’s newsprint tariffs” (June 10) overlooks one key point that may be influencing the newsprint tariff: Our president does not like newspapers. He may very well be aware that the tariff will harm newspapers. That may be part of the motivation for it. If (when) the Commerce Department study verifies that the bill will harm the newspaper industry, it may provide added incentive to retain the tariff, from the president’s point of view. Your editorial and the proposed legislation assume good intentions and fact-based decision-making. I suspect those assumptions are invalid.
