Boston Marathon elite field announced

Top Americans not in this year’s crop due to Olympic year

Twelve runners with personal-best marathon times better than 2 hours, 10 minutes headline the elite field for the 2012 Boston Marathon, organizers announced today.

Defending champions Geoffrey Mutai and Caroline Kilel previously announced they’d return for this year’s event. Mutai will be challenged by Ethiopia’s Gebre Gebremariam (2:04.53 personal record) and Kenya’s Levy Matebo (2:05.16), among others, for the April 16 race.

Three women in the elite field have personal records better than Kilel’s 2:22.36 set in last year’s Boston Marathon. Aselefech Mergia of Ethiopia ran a 2:19.31 marathon in Dubai this year, Galina Bogomolova of Russia has a personal best of 2:20.47 set in Chicago in 2006, and Mamit Daska of Ethiopia has ran a 2:21.59 in Frankfurt, Germany last year.

Neither of the top two American men, Ryan Hall and Meb Keflezighi, will participate because both have qualified for the US Olympic team for the London games in July and August. Hall was fourth last year.

Likewise, top American women Desiree Davila and Kara Goucher, who were second and fifth last year in Boston, have qualified for the US Olympic team and are not listed in the women’s elite field for this year’s Boston Marathon.

The elite fields, as announced by race sponsor John Hancock Financial (listed by name, country and personal-best marathon time and location/year set):
