Hurricane Sandy forces postponements

Hurricane Sandy forced the postponement of some Monday sporting events in the northeast, including local horse racing and high school athletics.

Suffolk Downs scratched its card of thoroughbred racing and simulcasting, which is scheduled to resume on Wednesday. The final day of the live racing season will now be Saturday, in conjunction with the Breeders’ Cup.

The Boston City League soccer and volleyball playoffs were also postponed.

The district policy is that all after-school programs and events are canceled when school is canceled, according to Boston Public Schools spokesman Matt Wilder.

Wilder said BPS athletic director Ken Still will reschedule the games on Tuesday.

Latin Academy-Burke and O’Bryant-Madison Park volleyball, Latin Academy-O’Bryant and New Mission-East Boston girls’ soccer, and Madison Park-Boston International and East Boston-Brighton games will be rescheduled.

Justin A. Rice contributed to this report. For more information on BPS postponements, visit
