    College hockey roundup: Girard backstops Harvard’s victory

    Raphael Girard made 34 saves and Harvard got goals from four players as the No. 17 Crimson beat 10th-ranked Cornell, 4-1, Friday night in Ithaca, N.Y.

    Alex Fallstrom got Harvard (4-2-0, 3-2-0 ECAC) started at 14:32 of the first period but the lead lasted only 26 seconds as John Knisley beat Girard for Cornell’s only tally.

    Sophomore Mike Seward quickly answered for Harvard though, beating Andy Iles with a shot through traffic for his second career goal.


    Kyle Crisuolo scored at 17:43 of the second period to extend Harvard’s lead and Girard did the rest, turning aside 12 Cornell shots in the final period. Petr Placek’s empty-net goal completed the scoring.

    BU 6, Vermont 2 — Six players scored and Sean Maguire made 29 saves to lift the 11th-ranked Terriers (6-3-0, 5-2-0 Hockey East) to an easy win over the Catamounts (1-4-2, 1-4-2) in Burlington, Vt.

    Ahti Oksanen, Sahir Gill, and Wade Megan scored in the final 8:14 of the first period to get the rout started for BU.

    New Hampshire 3, UMass-Lowell 0 — Casey DeSmith made 23 saves to earn his third straight shutout and Trevor van Riemsdyk scored the first goal and assisted on the second as the fifth-ranked Wildcats (7-1-1, 5-1-1 Hockey East) got past the host River Hawks (2-5-1, 1-4-1).

    Providence 6, Northeastern 2 — Derek Army had a hat trick and the host Friars (5-4-1, 4-3-0 Hockey East) routed the Huskies (4-5-1, 2-5-1).


    Maine 2, UMass 2 — Conor Allen scored with 1:08 left to rally the visiting Minutemen (3-4-1, 2-4-1 Hockey East) to a tie with the Black Bears (2-9-1, 1-5-1). Mark Nemec and Jake Rutt scored 1:42 apart in the first period for Maine.

    Colgate 5, Dartmouth 4 — The host Raiders erupted for four third-period goals and Robbie Boudon capped his hat trick with the game-winner with three seconds left as Colgate (5-6-1, 1-3-1 ECAC) stunned the 12th-ranked Big Green (5-1-1, 4-1-0). Eric Robinson had a goal and an assist for Dartmouth.

    Quinnipiac 5, Clarkson 2 — Jordan Samuels-Thomas scored twice and the visiting Bobcats (6-3-1, 3-0-0 ECAC) rolled past the Golden Knights (1-5-4, 1-1-1).

    Bentley 7, AIC 3 — Brett Gensler and Alex Grieve each had a goal and two assists and the visiting Falcons (4-4-0, 3-2-0 Atlantic Hockey) beat the Yellow Jackets (3-5-1, 0-3-1).

    Army 3, Sacred Heart 2 — Maurice Alvarez scored 44 seconds into the third period, lifting the host Black Knights (3-4-1, 3-2-1 Atlantic Hockey) past the Pioneers (0-9-1, 0-7-1).



    BC 6, Northeastern 4 — Alex Carpenter scored twice during a four-goal first period and the No. 5 Eagles (5-3-2, 4-2-1 Hockey East) held on to top the No. 9 Huskies (8-2-2, 4-2-1) at Matthews Arena.

    BU 7, Providence 1 — Jenelle Kohanchuk had two goals and three assists and Marie-Philip Poulin added two goals and two assists and the seventh-ranked Terriers (8-3-1, 4-2-1 Hockey East) breezed past the visiting Friars (7-5-2, 5-2-1).
