New England roundup: NU tops UNC Wilmington

Joel Smith scored 23 points and Demetrius Pollard had 17 to lead Northeastern to a 68-64 win over North Carolina Wilmington on Saturday at Matthews Arena.

The game featured 13 ties and 12 lead changes over the first 29 minutes of play.

The Seahawks (5-9, 0-2 Colonial Athletic Association) took a 48-45 lead on Tanner Milson’s 3-pointer with 11:45 left in the game, but lost their advantage for good after Pollard made a jumper and Smith hit a 3-pointer with 10:58 remaining.


Milson, who led UNC Wilmington with 20 points, made a 3-pointer to cut Northeastern’s lead to 67-64 with six seconds left. But the Huskies (7-7, 2-0) held on for the victory after a free throw by Jonathan Lee.

Hartford 77, BU 74 — At Case Gym, Wes Cole scored 22 points and the Hawks (9-6, 2-0 America East) rallied past the Terriers.

 D.J. Irving had 17 points, 6 steals, and 6 assists for BU (6-9, 0-2), and the junior moved into the top 10 on the Terriers’ career assists list with 335.

Stony Brook 65, New Hampshire 49 — Jameel Warney scored 18 points to lead the host Seawolves (10-4, 1-0 America East) past the Wildcats.

 Chandler Rhoads led UNH (4-10, 0-2) with 14 points and seven rebounds. It was the Wildcats’ fifth consecutive loss.


Vermont 70, Albany 45 — Trey Blue scored 15 points and three other Catamounts scored in double figures in a whitewashing of the visiting Great Danes (12-4, 1-1 America East).

 Luke Apfeld, Sandro Carissimo, and Candon Rusin each finished with 12 points for Vermont (9-5, 2-0).

Maine 81, Md.-Baltimore County 66 Justin Edwards and Alasdair Fraser scored 17 points apiece and all five Black Bears starters hit double figures in a win over the Retrievers (2-13, 0-2 America East) in Orono, Maine. Mike Allison posted 10 points and 10 rebounds for Maine (7-8, 2-0).

DePaul 83, Providence 73 — The Blue Demons (10-5, 1-1 Big East) defeated the host Friars behind 23 points and nine rebounds from Cleveland Melvin.

 Bryce Cotton led Providence (8-6, 0-2) with 20 points.


Quinnipiac 82, LIU-Brooklyn 74 — Ike Azotam made 8 of 10 shots en route to 17 points as the Bobcats (5-8, 1-1 Northeast) pulled away from the visiting Blackbirds (5-9, 0-2).

Sacred Heart 66, St. Francis (N.Y.) 65 — Shane Gibson scored a game-high 28 points, including the winning free throws with five seconds left, as the Pioneers (4-9, 2-0 Northeast) slipped past the Terriers in Fairfield, Conn. Jalen Cannon led the Terriers (5-8, 1-1) with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

Central Conn. 77, Robert Morris 70 — Kyle Vinales (34 points) helped the Blue Devils (5-8, 1-1 Northeast) snap a five-game losing streak with a win over the host Colonials (8-7, 0-2).

Bryant 78, St. Francis (Pa.) 58 — In Loretta, Pa., Alex Francis scored 21 points and Dyami Starks had 18 to lead the Bulldogs (9-4, 2-0 Northeast) over the Red Flash (1-12, 1-1).

Niagara 71, Fairfield 67 — Juan’ya Green scored 21 of his 31 points in the second half as the host Purple Eagles (7-7, 3-1 Metro­ Atlantic) edged the Stags.

 Derek Needham scored 13 points to pace four players for Fairfield (10-6, 2-2) in double figures.

Colgate 78, Dartmouth 62 — Murphy Burnatowski scored 21 points and the Raiders (6-10) used torrid shooting from 3-point range (10 of 13) to down the Big Green in Hanover, N.H.

 Jvonte Brooks scored 18 points and snared eight rebounds for Dartmouth (2-10).
