Roundup: Beverly boys too much for Swampscott

Considering Beverly’s and Swampscott’s boys’ hockey teams were a combined 19-1-1 coming into Saturday’s game, a close contest was expected. The game was close — for the first five minutes — before Beverly took over and defeated the Big Blue, 4-1, at Salem State University.

Swampscott scored first after a turnover, junior forward Griffin Hunt in perfect position for the tally.

Beverly’s Graham Doherty tied the score, getting the puck past Swampscott goalie Trent Gallagher.

“[Doherty’s] really turned into a dominant player,” said Beverly coach Bob Gilligan.

Beverly’s Jack Morency scored before the first period concluded for a 2-1 lead. Swampscott (9-2) had just four shots on goal in the first period.

“They played well as a team, but we didn’t give them a lot. [Swampscott] has a good record so far but I don’t think they’ve played a caliber team like us,” said Gilligan.

The second and third periods were dictated by Beverly (11-0-1). Nick Albano scored on a power play in the second and Connor Irving completed the scoring with three minutes left in the game.

“Our first line can dominate at times. I don’t think it was our best game but we boxed them into their end,” Gilligan said.
