DivISION 3 South BOYS’ HOCKEY final

Medway erupts, routs Pembroke

BOURNE — The goals hadn’t come in bunches through the first three games of the tournament for the Medway boys’ hockey team but they certainly did Monday night as the Mustangs captured their second consecutive Division 3 South title with a convincing 6-2 win over Pembroke at Gallo Arena.

“You could tell in the first period it was going to be one of those nights where our offense exploded,” said Medway coach Chris Ross. “Our offense came alive tonight.”

The Mustangs had scored only five goals — while giving up none — through three tournament games but they wasted no time setting the tone early. Just 18 seconds in, Nick DeCristoforo’s shot from the point was deflected into the net by senior Cam Fisher.

Medway (19-2-3) kept the pressure on and delivered the knockout blows during a 52-second span with five minutes left in the opening period.

The first goal came on a brilliant individual effort by Jack Kilty. The senior forward collected a loose puck and held off a defender with one arm and muscled home a one-handed backhand shot.

“I have said it a million times he is a bona fide Division 1 player and I think he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves but he has done that for us all year and that was a great individual effort,” Ross said.

Moments later Medway struck again with a flurry of shots that yielded a couple rebounds before sophomore Mike Boldy was able to bang it home for a 3-0 advantage.

Medway put things away in the second period with a fourth goal when Boldy found Josh O’Toole in the slot and he banged it into an open net.

The only drama left was to see if Medway’s tournament shutout streak would stay intact but a second-period goal by Pembroke co-captain Josh Golden got the Titans (14-8-5) on the board.

O’Toole added two more goals in the third period for the hat trick and exclamation point on the victory.

Medway will meet Swampscott in the Division 3 EMass title game Wednesday at Chelmsford Forum in Billerica.
