NHL roundup: Steve Ott caps Sabres victory

Steve Ott scored the decisive goal in the sixth round of the shootout as the host Buffalo Sabres rallied for a 5-4 win over the slumping Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night.

Ryan Miller, who stopped 32 shots through overtime, secured the win by stopping Clarke MacArthur’s attempt.

Christian Ehrhoff had a goal and two assists for Buffalo, while Tyler Ennis had a goal and an assist.


Nazem Kadri had two goals and an assist for Toronto.

Ehrhoff capped a three-goal rally and gave Buffalo a 4-3 lead when he scored on a power play 22 seconds into the third period.

The Maple Leafs responded six minutes later when Kadri deflected Cody Franson’s shot from the right circle to tie the game, 4-4.

Canadiens 5, Islanders 2 — Brian Gionta scored the go-ahead goal 48 seconds into the third period and P.K. Subban added two as Montreal beat New York in Uniondale, N.Y..

Subban tied the game 2-2 with his eighth goal 10:53 into the second period and added an insurance goal midway through the third. Carey Price made 25 saves for Montreal.


Michael Ryder and Brendan Gallagher also scored for Montreal, which is 14-1-4 since losing to Toronto 6-0 on Feb. 9.

John Tavares and Lubomir Visnovsky scored for the Islanders.

Devils 4, Hurricanes 1 — Martin Brodeur, out since Feb. 21 with a pinched nerve in his upper back and neck, scored his third career goal and made 17 saves to lead New Jersey over Carolina in Raleigh, N.C.

Brodeur got credit for the game’s first goal because he was the last Devil to touch the puck before Carolina’s Jordan Staal’s pass to the point from behind the net with a delayed penalty call pending bounced off the boards near center ice and slid into the net.

Peter Harrold, Adam Henrique, and Andrei Loktionov also scored for the Devils.


Jeff Skinner had the Hurricanes’ lone goal.

Panthers 3, Rangers 1 — Jacob Markstrom made 44 saves and just missed his first shutout as lowly Florida dealt playoff-hopeful New York a blow at Madison Square Garden.

Markstrom lost his shutout when Marian Gaborik scored with 3:48 left.

Brian Campbell, Scottie Upshall, and Tomas Kopecky scored for Florida.

Predators 5, Flames 3 — Mike Fisher scored two goals as host Nashville beat Calgary to snap a four-game losing streak.

Martin Erat, Nick Spaling, and Brandon Yip had the other Predator goals, and Pekka Rinne made 19 saves.

Mark Giordano, Blake Comeau, and Jarome Iginla scored for the Flames.

Capitals 4, Jets 0 — Braden Holtby made 19 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and Alexander Ovechkin had a goal and two assists to lead Washington in Winnipeg.

Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist, while Troy Brouwer and Marcus Johansson also scored.

Canucks 2, Coyotes 1 — Jordan Schroeder scored at 9:53 of the third period and Cory Schneider stopped 33 shots as Vancouver edged Phoenix in Glendale, Ariz.

Schneider allowed a tying goal to Antoine Vermette before Schroeder punched in a rebound past Jason LaBarbera.

Stars 2, Kings 0 — Jaromir Jagr and Ray Whitney scored 4:22 apart in the third period and Kari Lehtonen made 40 saves to lift visiting Dallas over Los Angeles.
