Notes: Saints sign linebacker Victor Butler

The New Orleans Saints and free agent linebacker Victor Butler agreed to terms on a two-year contract Thursday.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 245-pound Butler spent the past four seasons with the Cowboys, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2009. In New Orleans, he'll rejoin new Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who held the same position with the Cowboys the past two seasons.

Butler played defensive end at Oregon State and was converted to outside linebacker in Dallas’s 3-4 scheme, which the Saints will use this season.

Butler played in 16 games with one start last season. He was credited with 24 tackles, including three sacks, a tackle for a loss, three passes defended, and a forced fumble.

Defensive lineman Vaughn Martin signed a two-year contract with the Dolphins after starting the past two seasons with the Chargers. That’s ultimately my role.’’ A native of Jamaica, Martin was a fourth-round draft pick by the Chargers in 2009 and started 27 games the past two years. He missed the final three games in 2012 with a groin injury . . . The Colts acquired fullback Stanley Havili in a trade with the Eagles in exchange for defensive end Clifton Geathers. Geathers had five tackles and his first career sack with Indianapolis last season . . . Though interested in Buffalo, Davis hasn’t ruled out re-signing with Washington. He’s scheduled to visit the Jets on Friday . . . The Redskins signed free agent linebacker Darryl Tapp, who has played seven seasons with the Seahawks and Eagles . . .
