“I’m excited about the move, as the competition level is great,” said softball coach Brian Macchi. “[It’s an] early game in the season, but it’s definitely a good measuring stick playing the caliber of King Philip.”

Thursday’s shutout was Smith’s 42d. She had as she pitched all seven innings with 14 strikeouts and one walk. No. 41 came against Taunton on Tuesday in an 8-0 win.

“She definitely set the tone,” Macchi said.

King Philip’s Anna O’Neill matched Smith’s complete-game effort, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with 10 strikeouts, and two walks.

“With the caliber of [pitchers] Shannon and O’Neill, you knew it was going to be close game coming into it,” Macchi said.

Lizzie Stalleone’s two-out RBI single in the second inning broke the scoreless tie. Smith and Rachel Levine’s back-to-back, two-out singles in the fifth inning brought in the insurance runs.

Norwood 10, Brookline 0 — Jill Shepard no-hit the Warriors, striking out nine with one walk. Erin Garczynski led the Mustangs with a triple and two RBIs.
