School roundup: Lawrence boys spike Haverhill

“Y fuera,” was the chant that filled the Lawrence gymnasium Friday night, as the Lawrence boys’ volleyball squad shut down Merrimack Valley Conference foe Haverhill, 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-12).

The translation, “and it’s out,” came in handy after Lancers senior Jeyson Henriquez forced a handful of errors on Haverhill’s defense with block-kills and consistent coverage.

After finding out his twin brother Anibal would be sidelined with a sprained ankle, Jeyson set the tone in the first set for a 23-8 lead after pounding past a double-block.

“If [Anibal’s] not on the court, everyone’s looking up to me and follows me and I have to step up,” said Jeyson, a Daniel Webster-commit and Merrimack Valley Conference All-Star.

Lefty Bryan Camilo launched a spike down the line, winning it, 25-11.

The same plan didn’t work quite as well in the second set as the Lancers barely squeezed by with Haverhill’s Dylan Copeland picking up power.

“The second set they went haywire,” said Lancers coach Tony Hajjar. “It’s a habit we have: We win the first and they sit down thinking they have it.”

A Camilo spike and a Reibin Hiraldo service ace tied the second set at 24. A Haverhill error decided matters.
