Breakers play to draw in league opener

The Boston Breakers debuted Sunday in the new National Women’s Soccer League, earning a 1-1 draw with the Washington Spirit at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville.

Sydney Leroux, a member of the United States national team, scored in second-half stoppage time for the Breakers.

Ashley Phillips was strong in Boston’s net.

Tiffany McCarty scored in the 15th minute for Washington.

The Breakers, who formerly played in the Women’s United Soccer Association (2001-03) and Women’s Professional Soccer (2009-11), spent last season in the Women’s Premier Soccer League Elite.
