Red Sox place Joel Hanrahan on disabled list
The Red Sox have placed closer Joel Hanrahan on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain and called up righthanded knuckleballer Steven Wright from Triple A Pawtucket.
Hanrahan has been dealing with a right hamstring injury since April 3. He was shut down by the Red Sox on Sunday after struggling in three appearances.
Wright was 1-0 with a 2.70 earned run average in two starts for Pawtucket. The 28-year-old could make his debut against the Indians, the team that traded him to the Red Sox in July.
Wright has not pitched often in relief since adopting the knuckleball. If the Red Sox use him out of the bullpen, it would likely be in long relief.
Manager John Farrell said Sunday he hoped that Hanrahan would avoid a trip to the disabled list.
Andrew Bailey, who blew a save opportunity on Monday before picking up a win in the Red Sox' walkoff victory, will serve as the closer in Hanrahan's absence.
