Roundup: Xaverian’s Alex Person no-hits Brockton

Last year, Alex Person had two complete-game victories in the MIAA baseball tournament to help boost Xaverian to the Division 1 title. On Monday, Person was even more impressive, no-hitting Brockton on 96 pitches as the 14th-ranked Hawks won, 6-0, at home.

The senior righthander struck out 12 and walked two in improving to 2-0 on the year.

“[Alex] was in charge all day long,” said Xaverian coach Gerry Lambert. “He was getting ahead and his fastball was good.”

Lambert usually eases his pitchers into the season, and even with a no-hitter going he was cautious with Person.

“Going into the seventh inning I told him one hit or two base runners and I’m coming to get you,” said Lambert.

Person responded by retiring the side in order via a strikeout and a pair of ground outs.

Xaverian got off to an early lead when Austin DeCarr blasted a solo homer to left in the first.

“He just launched that ball. It cleared the wall by about 40 feet,” said Lambert.

The Hawks (5-4) scored another run in the first and four more in the second thanks in part to a couple of errors by Brockton.

The win was Xaverian’s fourth in five games and puts the Hawks above .500 for the first time this season. It also gives them momentum heading into Wednesday’s matchup against Catholic Memorial, the first of four straight Catholic Conference games.

BC High 5, Catholic Memorial 2 — Tom McDonald went the distance and Tom Landry went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the top-ranked Eagles.

Needham 6, Weymouth 5 — Steve Marciello went 3 for 4 to rally the Rockets, who scored six runs in the seventh to edge the Wildcats.

Mansfield 2, Taunton 0 — Adam Blake pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks for the Hornets (3-5).

Wayland 2, Weston 0 — Senior Yannick Schaefer scattered five hits and struck out three in the shutout.

Newton North 10, Brookline 0 — Junior Tommy Hodgson threw his second consecutive shutout, allowing two hits.

Avon 17, Ursuline 5 — Twins Jen and Chris Crane both homered for the Panthers (7-0).
