Golf notes: Harvard women, BC golfer ready for NCAAs

Fresh off a one-stroke victory at the Ivy League championships, the Harvard women’s golf team will participate in the NCAA West Regional, which begins Thursday in Stanford, Calif.

Isabel Southard, a Boston College freshman from Sharon, was selected to compete in the East Regional as an individual, the first player in program history to get picked.

The East Regional also starts on Thursday, and will be held in Auburn, Ala.

Southard has four top-10 finishes this season, with a team-best stroke average of 74.91.

Dantas qualifies

Jeffrey Dantas of Seekonk survived a four-for-two playoff, earning one of five spots at a local US Open qualifier at Crumpin-Fox Club on Wednesday. Dantas shot 72, three shots behind medalist Jesse Smith (Dover, N.H.). Also advancing were Jonathan Brisbane (Killington, Vt.) and Joseph Depanfilis (Naples, Fla.) with 1-under 71s, and Hunter Stone (Winter Park, Fla.), who also shot 72 and emerged from the playoff. Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) and Jason Thresher (West Suffield, Conn.) are the alternates . . . Rick Karbowski of Auburn Driving Range shot a 4-under-par 68 at Portsmouth Country Club in Greenland, N.H., to win the pro portion of a New England PGA pro-am. Karbowski also teamed with Art Fitzgerald, Paul Couture, and Tom Hogan to win the two better-ball competition . . . Shawn Warren (Nonesuch River) and Daniel Venezio (Myopia Hunt) shared medalist honors at the NEPGA’s Spring Series event at the Club at New Seabury, shooting 2-under-par 70s.

Deadline nears

The deadline to apply for the 22d Cape Cod Open is May 22. The 54-hole event will be at Olde Barnstable May 29 and Hyannis Golf Course May 30. Geoff Sisk will look to defend his title. Belated congratulations to Harry McCracken, who recently received the US Golf Association’s Ike Grainger Award, which recognizes volunteers who have given 25 years of service to golf organizations. McCracken has been involved with golf events run by the Massachusetts Golf Association, New England Golf Association, and the USGA since 1969 . . . A reminder that tickets for the Deutsche Bank Championship are available now. Tickets can be purchased by calling 800-594-8499, by visiting www.dbchampionship.com, or at any of the seven area Golfsmith locations . . . Wednesday’s Centennial Gala for the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund is sold out. More than 2,100 are expected at the Boston Expo & Convention Center.
