Schools: Christina Callahan scores 4 for Newton North

Senior midfielder Christina Callahan stole the show on Saturday when the second-ranked Newton North girls’ soccer team captain scored three goals in the first half and one in the second as the Tigers (11-0-1) cruised to a 5-0 victory over host No. 3 Beverly (9-3-2).

Also scoring for Newton North was senior forward Shannon Fitzgerald. She scored the fourth goal of the game, her 22d of the season, in the second half. Beverly senior Caitlin Harty, who led the state in scoring last year, was shut down by the Tigers’ defense.

“It started out as an open game, but it just didn’t go their way,” said Newton North coach James Hamblin. “[Christina] played the game of her life.”

The loss is Beverly’s second in as many games. The Panthers also fell to Marblehead, 1-0, on Wednesday. Newton North has a firm hold on first place in the Bay State Conference.
