Red Sox, Cardinals now even in World Series play

The 2013 World Series has a familiar look to it, with the Red Sox and Cardinals facing off for the fourth time in MLB’s Fall Classic.

The teams have met only 9 times in regular-season games, but have 18 games of World Series experience from their three previous postseason dates.

  • Winner: Cardinals in seven games

  • Red Sox notable players: Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky

  • Cardinals notable players: Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter, Red Schoendienst

  • Turning point: The Cardinals won Game 7 4-3 with an eighth-inning go-ahead run scored by Enos Slaughter when Pesky “froze” momentarily with the relay throw from the outfield.

  • Winner: Cardinals in seven games

  • Red Sox notable players: Carl Yastrzemski, Rico Petrocelli, Jim Lonborg

  • Cardinals notable players: Bob Gibson, Tim McCarver, Lou Brock

  • Turning point: Bob Gibson extinguished the Red Sox’ comeback from a 3-1 series deficit by winning his third game of the series and shutting down the Boston bats at Fenway Park in a 7-2 Game 7 victory.

  • Red Sox championship drought: Extends to 49 years

2004 World Series

  • Winner: Red Sox in four games

  • Red Sox notable players: Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, David Ortiz

  • Cardinals notable players: Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds

  • Turning point: Mark Bellhorn blasted a game-clinching two-run home run in the bottom of Game 1 that powered an 11-9 win. The Cardinals couldn’t stop the Red Sox’ momentum after that.

  • Red Sox championship drought: Finally ends

2013 World Series

  • Winner: Red Sox in six games

  • Red Sox notable players: David Ortiz, Jon Lester, John Lackey, Koji Uehara

  • Cardinals notable players: Adam Wainwright, Michael Wacha, Yadier Molina, Carlos Beltran

  • Turning point: Jonny Gomes’ crucial three-run home run in Game 4 allowed the Red Sox to flip the momentum of the series. The Sox offense struggled for much of the series, but Gomes’ home run came at the right time and powered a 4-2 win. The Red Sox would not trail for the remainder of the series.

  • Red Sox championship drought: Nine years after the title drought ended, the Red Sox clinched their first World Series in Fenway Park since 1918.
