It was another win for the first round of the 2006 draft when the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw (seventh) and the Tigers’ Max Scherzer (11th by Arizona) took home the Cy Young awards, Kershaw for the second time. Throw in the Giants’ Tim Lincecum, taken 11th in the 2006 draft, and there’s five Cy Youngs among the three.

Their combined stats: 239-161 (.598), 3.24 ERA, 1.190 WHIP and 9.43 K’s per nine innings. As good as the trio has been, consider that five pitchers were taken before the Dodgers selected Kershaw seventh. Their careers, however, haven’t been much to talk about. A look at them:

    1st pick

    Luke Hochevar, Royals

    7 seasons: 43-61, 5.10 ERA, 1.355 WHIP, 6.6 K/9

    Verdict: Thumbs sideways

A flop as a starter, he went 5-2, 1.92 ERA, 0.825 WHIP with 82 K’s in 70 1/3 IP out of the bullpen in 2013.

    2nd pick

    Greg Reynolds, Rockies

    3 ML seasons, 6-11, 5.52 ERA, 1.638 WHIP, 3.9 K/9

    Verdict: Thumbs down

No success as starter or reliever: Nearly as many walks (42) as whiffs (53) in 123 1/3 IP.

    4th pick

Brad Lincoln, Pirates (traded to Blue Jays in July 2012)

    4 seasons, 9-11, 4.66 ERA, 1.386 WHIP, 6.8 K/9

    Verdict: Thumbs down

A flop as a starter in Pittsburgh, he hasn’t been much better out of pen with Blue Jays.

    5th pick

Brandon Morrow, Mariners (traded to Blue Jays in December 2009)

    7 seasons, 41-40, 4.22 ERA, 1.343 WHIP, 9.4 K/9

    Verdict: Thumbs sideways

Hard thrower done in by injuries; After seeming to turn corner in 2012, able to make only 10 starts in 2013.

    6th pick

Andrew Miller, Tigers (Traded to Marlins in December 2007; traded to Red Sox in November 2010)

    8 seasons, 25-33, 5.33 ERA, 1.671 WHIP, 8.1 K/9

    Verdict: Thumbs sideways

A flop as a starter with all three teams, has evolved into decent arm out of bullpen (3.24 ERA in 95 appearances) in Boston.
