Roundup: Milton rally stuns Archbishop Williams

Trailing, 3-0, in the first period, things looked ominous for the Milton girls’ hockey team in Tuesday’s Division 2 preliminary round matchup with Archbishop Williams in Randolph. However, it was the 22d-seeded Wildcats who were smiling at the end of the day after pulling off a most improbable comeback.

Freshman center Elena Kapolis scored with roughly a minute remaining to tie it, then popped in the winner in overtime to stun the seventh-seeded Bishops, 4-3. Kapolis has nine goals and 18 points on the season.

“She’s really picked it up the last four or five games,” coach Bob Dwan said. “She was pumped. We were down, 3-0, and they never quit. [The Archies] couldn’t even move.”

Eight-grader Julie Scannell, who also has 18 points on the season, scored the second goal in the third period and assisted on Kapolis’s winner. Milton’s Sarah Parker had 23 saves, including blocking two breakaways in the second.

“She’s been the backbone of the team,” said Dwan, who in his first year at the helm gained a measure of revenge after his squad lost to Williams during the regular season.
