Spring training report: Red Sox beat up by Orioles

SCORES: Game 1: Orioles (split squad) 7, Red Sox (split squad) 3. Game 2: Orioles (split squad) 13, Red Sox (split squad) 2.

RECORD: 2-7-1.

GAME 1 BREAKDOWN: Red Sox starter Henry Owens allowed three runs on five hits before being taken out in the third inning in Sarasota. Alex Wilson gave up four runs in the sixth inning. Former Sox infielder Alex Gonzalez had a two-run homer for the Orioles.


GAME 2 BREAKDOWN: It was an ugly night in Fort Myers. The Sox were held to two hits and committed six errors. Michael Almanzar, a Rule 5 Draft pick from the Red Sox, drove in three runs for the Orioles. Mike Yastrzemski (Carl’s grandson) added two RBIs for Baltimore, which had 13 hits. Kevin Gausman (3 innings, 1 hit, 3 K’s) and the Orioles bullpen shut down a lineup of Red Sox regulars.

THUMBS UP: Will Middlebrooks and Bryce Brentz were each 2 for 3 with a home run in the first game. Brentz has three home runs in 18 at-bats . . . After missing three days with a sore left ankle, A.J. Pierzynski caught six innings in the second game.

THUMBS DOWN: Righthander Miguel Celestino could not get an out in the seventh inning of Game 2. He was charged with six runs (three earned) as the Sox gave up eight runs in the inning. Japanese submariner Shunsuke Watanabe gave up two runs in that inning . . . Mike Carp was 0 for 3 in Game 1 and is off to a 2-for-15 (.133) start with five strikeouts. Carp played first base and was charged with an error . . . First base prospect Travis Shaw was 0 for 4 in the first game and is 1 for 14.

MEDICAL REPORT: Jake Peavy threw three innings in the bullpen and is lined up to start on Thursday against Minnesota. Peavy is recovering from a deep cut on his left index finger . . . Lefthanded reliever Craig Breslow, who has yet to pitch in a game, should get on the mound soon. He has been brought along slowly after a heavy workload last season and lingering concerns about his shoulder.

AROUND THE BASES: Game 1 drew 7,858 to Ed Smith Stadium, the first sellout of the season in Sarasota . . . The Red Sox are off Wednesday, but Felix Doubront will pitch in a minor league intrasquad game to stay on turn . . . MLB executive vice president Joe Torre attended the first game. He was hoping to see a replay challenge to test how the system works, but none transpired . . . Former Boston mayor Tom Menino attended the nightcap . . . The Red Sox have been outscored, 64-31, in 10 games.


NEXT GAME: The Sox play the Pirates in Bradenton on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Clay Buchholz will face Charlie Morton.
