Baseball notebook: Elbow injury could sideline Corbin for the season

Diamondbacks lefthander Patrick Corbin has a partially torn ligament in his left elbow that may require season-ending surgery. Corbin said Sunday he has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament and is getting a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews before deciding whether to try rehab or have surgery. ‘‘This is all new to me,’’ Corbin said. ‘‘I’ve never been hurt before. I’m just trying to get through it.’’

Corbin had been designated the team’s Opening Day starter against the Dodgers in Australia, but left Saturday’s game against Cleveland in the seventh inning with forearm stiffness. He was 14-8 with a 3.41 ERA and made the All-Star team as a rookie last season.

Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said lefthander Wade Miley will start Saturday’s opener.

Corbin said he had experienced minor tightness in the arm but the condition grew more serious with his final three pitches on Saturday.

‘‘It felt like a small little shock in there,” he said. “Nothing popped in there, just a different feel I wasn’t used to, just really uncomfortable.’’

Ellsbury (calf) sits Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was scratched from the lineup in the Yankees’ 7-4 win over the Braves in Tampa because of tightness in his right calf. Ellsbury also will not play Monday against Pittsburgh.

It has not been determined if he will play against the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka allowed one run and three hits while striking out six over 4⅓ innings against the Braves, while a Yankees’ split squad beat the Marlins in Panama City, 7-0, behind CC Sabathia’s five hitless innings.

Niese to have MRI

The Mets’ Jonathon Niese left his start against the Cardinals after two innings with a sore elbow, the latest setback for the lefthander in what he described as ‘‘the spring training from hell.” Niese, slowed by shoulder soreness earlier this spring, will have an MRI, and it’s unclear when he might pitch again. Niese, who started the Mets’ season opener last year, allowed two runs in two innings . . . Justin Masterson, who will start Opening Day, struck out eight in five scoreless innings, leading an Indians’ split squad to a 3-2 victory over the Cubs in Mesa, Ariz. . . . Adrian Gonzalez had two RBIs, Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched into the sixth inning and allowed two runs, and the Dodgers tied the Rockies, 3-3, in Glendale, Ariz., in their final spring tuneup before leaving for Australia to open the regular season Saturday . . . Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, recovering from an advanced form of skin cancer that kept him from being a spring instructor with the Phillies, visited the team’s camp in Clearwater, Fla., and said, “I feel fantastic now.” Schmidt, 64, is scheduled for a scan Monday to see how far his recovery has progressed.
