Massachusetts girls win Eastern cross-country ski title

Led by individual champion Julia Kern, the Massachusetts girls captured the team title at the 31st annual Eastern High School Championships Sunday in Chittenden, Vt.

The title was clinched at Sunday’s mixed relay, the last of the four Nordic races that started Friday with the 5-kilometer freestyle, and continued Saturday with the 7.5k classic and the 1.5k sprint. The mixed relay is two boys and two girls, each skiing a 2-kilometer leg and until Vermont’s win last winter, Massachusetts had won six straight mixed-relay titles.

Kern attends Waltham, a school without a cross-country team, and she went off first followed by Acton-Boxboro’s Lewis Nottonson and Weston’s Zoe Snow. Snow gave Needham’s Chris Koziel a 10-second lead and Koziel pulled away, with the four registering a time of 26 minutes 16 seconds. Vermont was second in 26:43.

In the overall team scores (boys and girls), Vermont was first with 15,224 points, followed by Massachusetts (13,330) and Maine (13,286).
