Scott Spinelli is thrilled to be back home.

After spending the past eight seasons as an assistant coach under Mark Turgeon at three different schools, the Leominster native and Boston University graduate was named an assistant basketball coach at Boston College Monday, bringing with him area ties and a strong background in recruiting.

“This is an extremely unique opportunity for me to bring my family back home and coach at a place I grew up rooting for as a kid,’’ Spinelli, 47, said Monday. “I’m extremely excited to be able to come back and work for a coach I have known for 20 years and have a great respect for and I’m hoping to be able to help energize Boston College by going out and finding the kind of players that will help get this thing going again.’’

New BC coach Jim Christian says he got the man he wanted.

“Scott has had success everywhere he’s coached and he has a few important qualities I was looking for: the ability to recruit and coach at a high level, and to develop the student-athletes in our program,’’ Christian said.

While with Maryland the past three seasons, Spinelli helped recruit back-to-back top-25 classes as rated by ESPN, including landing top prospect Jake Layman of Wrentham and King Philip in 2012.

Spinelli also was an assistant under Turgeon at Wichita State and Texas A&M.

Spinelli began his coaching career as a head coach at two prep schools, Milford (N.Y.) Academy (1990-93) and the Winchendon School (1993-96). He also worked with Loyola-Chicago (2001-03), the Philadelphia 76ers (2000-01), the Cincinnati Stuff of the IBL (1999-2000), American University (1997-99), and Wyoming (1996-97).
