Julian Edelman returned a punt for an 84-yard touchdown against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Julian Edelman of the Patriots was fined $5,512 by the NFL for throwing the football into the stands after his 84-yard punt return for a touchdown in Sunday’s victory over the Broncos.

A league source said the NFL punishes players for throwing the ball into the stands because the NFL deems it a fan safety issue. Fans might fight for the ball and spectators could be knocked over

Players are not automatically fined for throwing the ball into the crowd. Patriots running back Shane Vereen will not be fined after his touchdown against the Jets because there was no video evidence of where the ball landed or any fan scrum.
