The Red Sox have made righthander Justin Masterson a one-year contract offer as a back-end starter in the rotation.

Masterson is a former Red Sox farmhand who was traded to Cleveland in 2009 for catcher Victor Martinez. His agent, Randy Rowley, confirmed the offer.

Masterson endured the worst season of his career in 2014 because of three different injuries to his knee, back, and shoulder (impingement). Masterson was traded at the trade deadline from Cleveland to St Louis, but he was demoted from the starting rotation due to ineffectiveness.

Masterson had been a workhorse before that. In seven seasons, he has a 60-72 record with a 4.24 ERA. He has pitched 1,141 2/3 innings, and thrown more than 200 innings twice, in 2011 and 2012 in Cleveland.
