Television ads for this year’s Super Bowl football game are selling for a record $4.4 million to $4.5 million, Comcast Corp.’s NBC said.

About 95 percent of the advertising spots for the Feb. 1 game are already sold, Seth Winter, an NBCUniversal executive vice president of marketing and sales, said Wednesday at a press conference. A single spot costs $4.5 million, while multiple ones are $4.4 million each, NBC said. The price is a record for a broadcast of the Super Bowl.

Last year’s matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos attracted a US record 112.2 million viewers, according to Fox Sports, which televised the game.

The high level of attention given to the commercials pressures marketers to make their spots memorable enough to be the subject of water-cooler talk the next day.
