ATLANTA — The trade deadline is July 31 but one player who definitely won’t be changing teams is Red Sox slugger David Ortiz.
Even if Ortiz starts hitting again in a way that would make him attractive to other teams, along with his postseason résumé, he said he would never waive his 10/5 rights in order to be dealt to a contender.
“No chance,” Ortiz said Thursday. “This is the team I’ll be with the rest of my career.
“I couldn’t do that to my family. I couldn’t just go to another team and fit in after all of these years. I want to be here.”
Ortiz said it would be flattering to think of another team wanting him for the stretch run, with his three championship rings and boatload of postseason success individually.
But even a team such as Minnesota, where he once played and where he first befriended Torii Hunter — who did return to the Twin Cities this season — wouldn’t be a lure.
