Red Sox draft pick Andrew Benintendi wins Golden Spikes Award

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — University of Arkansas outfielder Andrew Benintendi, who was the Red Sox’ first-round pick in this month’s draft, has been selected as the winner of the Golden Spikes Award as the top college baseball player in the nation.

Benintendi was announced Tuesday as the winner of the award presented by USA Baseball and is sponsored by Major League Baseball. Benintendi was previously named College Player of the Year by Baseball America and by Collegiate Baseball. He is also the winner of the Dick Howser Trophy, as the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, and is an All-American.

Benintendi is a sophomore who led the nation with 20 home runs and helped Arkansas to a spot in the College World Series.
