Red Sox prospect Brian Johnson will be placed on the minor league disabled list after leaving his start for Triple A Pawtucket on Sunday after four innings because of tightness in his pitching elbow.

The 24-year-old lefthander was to undergo further evaluation Monday and Tuesday.

Johnson made his big league debut July 21, an 8-3 loss at Houston, before he was optioned back to Pawtucket. He threw 6⅓ shutout innings for the PawSox last Tuesday, and is 9-6 with a 2.53 ERA this season at Triple A.

Johnson was expected to rejoin the Red Sox rotation perhaps as early as this week, but that plan is now on hold pending his medical evaluation.
