St. John’s Prep coach Dave Crowell was curious to see how his boys’ soccer team would respond from its loss to Xaverian on Friday.
Having graduated 10 starters from last season, the No. 13 Eagles are fielding a team with a limited amount of varsity experience, but that didn’t stop them from coming from behind to top No. 16 Masconomet, 2-1, on Monday.
The Chieftains took the lead on a penalty kick in the first half, giving Crowell an opportunity to size up his team.
“I was very curious how they were going to respond,” said Crowell.
It took about 15 minutes into the second half for senior midfielder Matt Gianetta to tie the game with a penalty kick. One minute later, Gianetta’s corner kick connected with the head of teammate Quinn Williams at the near post for the winner. It was Williams’s third goal of the year.

“Masconomet is a very good team,” said Crowell. “[The win] feels great, especially coming off the loss to Xaverian.
“I thought we really responded well after they went ahead. I thought we were the better team.”
“We have a lot of inexperience all over the field. I’m really happy with the way they responded after getting down. Even against Xaverian, we were able to get one goal late [to trim the lead].
Gianetta, an undersized player positioned at center midfielder, has been finding his niche this season.
“He’s very quick and skilled with his feet. Really does a great job controlling and distributing the ball,” said Crowell. “He can actually use his size to his advantage as times.”
Crowell added he looks forward to playing Masconomet each year.
“It’s become a great rivalry,” he said. “One of the games we look forward to playing.”
