Patriots wide receiver Brandon LaFell was targeted eight times on Sunday, but made only two receptions.
Brandon LaFell said last week that while he missed football during this rehab from a foot injury, he didn’t miss participating in training camp. In his debut Sunday, he looked like a man in need of some camp time.
LaFell had a forgettable game for the Patriots, dropping six passes in eight targets. He finished with two grabs for 25 yards in a 30-23 win over the Jets at Gillette Stadium.
LaFell was not a happy camper when asked about his performance.
“Performance? If I had to give myself a grade, it would be an F. I let the ball get out of my hands too many times. Tom [Brady] threw some good balls, I should have caught them,’’ he said. “I just have to get back to it. We have a short week. Dust the cobwebs off and come back out here and play.’’
LaFell refused to blame the drops on rust or timing.
“First game, last game — it doesn’t matter,’’ he said. “I expect more out of myself and my teammates expect more from me. I’m really just down on myself right now, but I’m happy for the other guys around me, stepping their level of play up.’’
