WORCESTER — St. John’s wasn’t about to let a devastating loss to Nashoba in the Central Mass. final get in the way of beating rival St. Peter-Marian in their annual Thanksgiving game at Fitton Field.
Senior MacBrien Nkongchu scored a touchdown on both sides of the ball in the first half as the Pioneers (9-3) topped the Guardians, 34-14, for the third straight year.
“Our goal was to play all three phases of the game,” St. John’s coach John Andreoli. “We had some games where we put a couple of half together, but not never at the same time.”
St. John’s junior Tim Cassidy completed 17 of 28 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns, while classmate Nick Pallotta had two TD catches to earn the Corsac Award as the game’s MVP.
Anthony Baldino rushed for 65 yards on 18 carries, while Danny Malm threw for 95 yards for St. Peter-Marian (5-7).
St. John’s scored its first touchdown on defense. After a beautiful punt by senior John Buckley pinned St. Peter-Marian on its 4, Nkongchu intercepted a tipped Malm pass at the 20 and returned it to the end zone.
“We did a good job in man coverage,” Andreoli said. “We played some man free today, we threw some blitzes with two-man group blitzes, played man coverage behind it.”
