    THE GLOBIES

David Ortiz is the big winner at 2016 Globies Awards

David Ortiz was the big winner at the second annual The Globies sports award program hosted by The Boston Globe on Monday night.

Ortiz was honored in four individual categories — Boston Pride, Red Sox MVP, Best Moment, and Athlete of the Year — and was also part of two sports marketing awards.

“I want to thank you [fans]. Every time I take the field I want to give everything I have because of you,” Ortiz said.

Then Ortiz adapted a line from his famous Fenway Park speech after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.

“This is the best [expletive] sports city in the world.”

At a packed House of Blues, Ortiz and other Boston sports figures were honored for accomplishments over the past 15 months. Two other awards — Lifetime Achievement (Bob Cousy) and Community Hero (Team Impact) — recognized long-term contributions to the sports community.

Ortiz’s “Best Moment” was his 500th home run in September of 2015. The time period for consideration for the 2016 Globies was July of 2015 to July of 2016.

NESN’s Red Sox play-by-play announcer Dave O’Brien was honored as the “Voice of Boston.”

Two women whose acts of sportsmanship made international headlines received Good Sport Awards: Boston Marathon champion Atsede Bayse giving her trophy to Roberta Gibb in recognition of Gibb becoming the first woman to run the Boston Marathon in 1966; and Abbey D’Agostino, the runner from Topsfield who stopped during the women’s 5,000 meters at the Olympics to assist and encourage a fallen competitor.

NESN will broadcast The Globies on Friday at 8 p.m.
