2016 Boys’ Cross Country All-Scholastics

Peabody's Marcelo Rocha won the All-State Division 1 meet (15:38).

Runners of the Year

Division 1: Marcelo Rocha, Peabody

Rocha capped off his season by winning the All-State Division 1 meet (15:38), the EMass Division 1 meet (15:27), the Frank Kelley Invitational (15:36) and the Bay State Invitational Ken Knowlton race (15:57). He’ll attend PC.

Division 2: Jack Carleo, Newburyport

Carleo’s high school cross country career ended on a high-note, as he raced to a first-place finish in the All-State Division 2 meet (16:20). He won the EMass Division 2 meet (16:05) and the Cape Ann League meet (15:40).

All-Scholastics

Lucas Aramburu, Brookline, sophomore

Aramburu was third at the All-State Division 1 meet (15:59) and seventh at EMass Division 1 meet (16:08). He finished second at the Twilight Meet (15:24) and fourth at the Bay State Conference championships (15:33).

Steve Flanagan, Needham, senior

Flanagan finished 11th at the EMass Division 2 meet (16:31) and 20th at the All-State Division 1 meet (16:45). The senior captain was fourth at the Twilight Meet (15:35), and second at the conference meet (15:20).

Matt Greatorex, Wakefield, junior

The Middlesex League All-Star finished 12th at the All-State Division 2 meet (16:54) and first at the EMass Division 4 meet (16:19). The junior runner finished second at the Twilight Meet Division 2 race (15:57).

Derek Holmes, Marshfield, senior

Holmes raced to 11th place at the All-State Division 1 meet (16:29) and fourth at the EMass Division 2 meet (16:15). A National Honor Society member, Holmes placed fourth at the Bay State Invitational Ken Knowlton race (16:29).

Thomas Lingard, Lexington, junior

Lingard was seventh at the All-State Division 1 meet (16:18) and fourth at the EMass Division 1 meet (15:50). He was second in the Middlesex League meet and fourth at the Bay State Invitational Dick Donahue race.

Andrew Mah, Newton North, junior

Mah placed 10th at the All-State Division 1 meet (16:24) and third at the EMass Division 1 meet (15:39). He won the Bay State Conference meet (15:06), setting a course record. He was 20th at the FootLocker Northeast Regionals.

Ben Matejka, Wellesley, senior

Matejka’s ninth-place finish at the All-State Division 1 meet (16:23) helped the Raiders to a state championship. He was first at the EMass Division 2 meet (16:00) and third at the Frank Kelley Invitational (16:15).

Steven O’Driscoll, Norwell, junior

O’Driscoll placed ninth at the All-State Division 2 race and third at the EMass Division 5 meet. He won the South Shore League meet (16:21) and was second at the FootLocker Northeast Regionals Junior/Senior race.

Christopher Polanco, Lowell, senior

Polanco finished fourth at the All-State Division 1 meet (16:04) and fifth at the EMass Division 1 meet (15:50). He took second at the Bay State Invitational Ken Knowlton Race and first at the Merrimack Valley Conference championship.

Anthony Rodriguez, Lowell, senior

Rodriguez was eighth at the All-State Division 1 meet and sixth at the EMass Division 1 meet . He was third at the Bay State Invitational Ken Knowlton Race (16:27) and second at the Merrimack Valley Conference championship.

Tristan Shelgren, St. John’s Prep, junior

Shelgren was second at the All-State Division 1 meet (15:59) and at the EMass Division 1 meet (15:38). He took first at the Catholic Conference meet (16:09) and the Bay State Invitational Bob Cali race (16:18).

Thomas Weiss, Wellesley, junior

Weiss finished 13th in Division 1 at the All-State meet (16:32) and helped lead Wellesley to a state title. He was the runner-up at the Division 2 EMass meet (15:39) and finished fifth at the Bay State Conference championship.

Coaches of the Year

Division 1: Phil Maiam, Lowell

Maia finished his 34th and final season at Lowell with a 10-0 regular-season record and a second-place finish at the Division 1 All-State meet. Lowell also won the Division 1 EMass championship. He has a 258-39-2 career record.

Division 2: Perry Pappas, Wakefield

Pappas led Wakefield to a 6-1 regular season record (5-0 in the Middlesex League) and second-place at the Division 2 All-State meet. Wakefield also won the Division 4 EMass championship and the Middlesex League meet.
