The New England Revolution completed the signing of free agent defender Claude Dielna, most recently under contract at English club Sheffield Wednesday.
Pending the receipt of his P-1 Visa, Dielna will be added to the roster as either a designated player or with the use of Targeted Allocation Money.
Adding Dielna is designed to bolster a New England backline that has struggled of late, conceding 13 goals in its last five league matches. Though his primary position is central defender, the left-footed Dielna has experience playing as a left-back as well — an area of need for the Revs.
The Revolution made a pair of defensive signings in the offseason — Antonio Delamea and Benjamin Angoua — with the former being one of the best players for the Revs this season.
Dielna has spent the past 2½ seasons on loan with Slovan Bratislava (2015-16) and Dinamo Bucuresti (2017), earning just 14 appearances during that span.
“I’m very happy to sign for this club. I’m very excited to start the competition,” said Dielna. “The club looks to be a family and that’s what I need. I will try to bring my international experience and my quality to help the team.”Dan Shulman can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org; follow him on Twitter @GlobeDanShulman
