Meet New England’s competitors in the 2018 Paralympics

The Paralympics begin Friday in PyeongChang, South Korea, and Team USA includes a number of athletes with connections to New England, according to their US Olympic Committee bios.

Here’s a look.

Alpine skiing

Andrew Haraghey – Born in Hartford and raised in Enfield, Conn., he began skiing at the age of seven and received the Bob Casey Courage Award from the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance in 2014.

Connor Hogan – The 20-year-old Foxborough resident finished 15th in the slalom event at the 2015 World Championships.

Stephen Lawler – Competing in his second Paralympic Games, the native of Burlington, Vt., recovered from numerous shoulder injuries to make the 2014 team in Sochi.

Staci Mannella – A student at Dartmouth, Mannella placed sixth in the slalom and giant slalom events at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games.

Laurie Stephens – The Hamilton-Wenham and University of New Hampshire graduate is the most decorated athlete on the team, with six medals to her name (including two golds) since her first Paralympic Games in 2006.

Rob Umstead – Born in Danvers, Umstead has served as guide to wife and fellow US teammate Danelle since 2008, as the couple has earned three bronze medals since 2010.

Tyler Walker – Born in Hanover, N.H., the University of New Hampshire graduate has competed in every Paralympic Games since 2006, finishing sixth in the giant slalom in 2006.

Thomas Walsh – A graduate of Green Mountain Valley School in Waitsfield, Vt., in 2013, Walsh won a Junior National Triathlon Championship at the age of 10.

Spencer Wood – A native of Pittsfield, Vt., the 21-year-old Wood began ski racing at age five and will compete in his first Paralympic Games.

Nordic skiing

Jake Adicoff – A senior at Bowdoin College, Adicoff placed sixth in the 20 kilometer classic style race at the 2014 Paralympics and was the 2014 U.S. Paralympics Nordic skiing national champion.

Dan Cnossen – A veteran of the U.S. Navy who served as the platoon commander for SEAL Team One in Afghanistan, Cnossen placed sixth in the cross-country sprint at the 2014 Games and is working on his Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Theological Studies at Harvard.

Ruslan Reiter – Born in Russia, the biathlon athlete was adopted and grew up in Manchester, Maine, graduating from Maranacook Community High School in Readfield, Maine.

Sled hockey

Noah Grove – The 18-year-old student at the University of New Hampshire made his U.S. national team debut as a forward in 2016 and also competes for the U.S. amputee soccer team.

Wheelchair curling

Stephen Emt – A Connecticut resident and graduate of UConn, Emt has been a member of Team USA for the World Wheelchair Championships since 2015.

Meghan Lino – Born and raised in Falmouth, Lino will compete in her second Paralympic Games.
