Many of the top teams in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) will take the court in the eighth annual Scholar Roundball Classic at Babson College this weekend.
Among the five-year preparatory schools is a lone four-year school, ISL power Rivers, which opens Friday’s five-game slate against NEPSAC Class AA program Wilbraham & Monson Academy at 3 p.m.
“We’re a very competitive school and have a competitive basketball team,” said Rivers athletic director Robert Pipe. “Our coach, Keith Zalaski, has done a great job maintaing a high level and we always want to play the top competition around.”
This is the fourth straight year Rivers will compete in the Roundball Classic, a tradition that Pipe said began when current Villanova sophomore Jermaine Samuels started to garner looks from Division 1 colleges while playing at Rivers.
On Saturday, Williston Northampton School, Milton Academy, Tabor Academy, and nationally-ranked Northfield Mount Hermon School face out-of-state opponents.
The Roundball Classic wraps up Sunday beginning with Phillips Andover facing Kimball Union Academy (N.H.) at 9:30 a.m. and concluding with Brimmer & May taking on Marianapolis (Conn.) Prep at 6:30 p.m.
The following weekend, the Rivers boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will host the annual Rivers Holiday tournament featuring private schools from throughout New England.Nate Weitzer can be reached at email@example.com
