Although the process was somewhat turbulent, Dexter Southfield running back Tyrell Wiggins has found a place to continue his football career. The all-time leading rusher in Dexter history was originally committed to play at UMass Amherst, but new coach Walt Bell reevaluated his recruiting class after taking over last December, and reportedly pulled the offer from the Roxbury teen.

On Wednesday, the second period of National Signing Day, Wiggins signed his commitment to the University of New Hampshire, a program that Dexter coach Casey Day feels is a perfect fit for the four-time all-star running back.

“From having [Wiggins] the last four years, I can’t think of a better spot for the type of football player he is,” said Day. “He’s an athlete, for lack of a better term, and those types of kids have had a lot of success at UNH.”

According to Day, UNH coach Sean McDonnell offered a full scholarship to Wiggins about three weeks ago, and visited Dexter two weeks ago. Wiggins went up to UNH for an official visit that weekend and the NEPSAC Class C co-Player of the Year eventually decided to commit.

“After everything that happened with UMass, I was just glad I could find a place where I could contribute to another D1 program,” said Wiggins, who averaged more than 10 yards per carry and scored 14 touchdowns over nine games last season. “The best thing I could do is stay positive. I always thought I would find a spot. Now I’m excited to get started.”
