Bruins superfan Liam Fitzgerald earned the honors of fan banner captain for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final Wednesday night at TD Garden.

“Throughout the playoffs, inspirational athletes and coaches have held our fan banner,” read the center-court video board ahead of puck drop. “Tonight we turn the honors over to our most inspirational fan. He kicked cancer’s butt and is a true champion in a city of champions.”

Known simply as the “fist bump kid,” Fitzgerald went viral in 2014 when he was invited to sit on the bench during pre-game skate and fist-bumped each player as the team walked off the ice. Fitzgerald, who has Down syndrome, is six years cancer-free after battling leukemia.

Standing beside Fitzgerald in the lower bowl Wednesday were two iconic Boston athletes: Olympic gymnast and Needham native Aly Raisman and Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman. Both were wearing jerseys to support retired Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who is recovering at Massachusetts General Hospital after getting shot in the Dominican Republic.
