The Celtics on Wednesday finalized a three-year deal with second-round draft pick Ben Bentil, the team announced in a release. The former Providence College forward will receive a partial guarantee in the first year, an NBA source said.
Bentil’s signing puts the Celtics’ roster at 18 players, three above the maximum. The Celtics also officially announced the signings of draft picks Jaylen Brown and Demetrius Jackson, and Tyler Zeller and free agent Gerald Green.
Last week, a league source told the Globe that Bentil and guards John Holland, James Young, and R.J. Hunter likely would be in a training camp battle for the 15th and final roster spot.
Bentil played well for the Celtics in the Utah summer league earlier this month, averaging 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. But when forward Jordan Mickey returned from a shoulder injury in the Las Vegas summer league, Bentil’s playing time decreased and he struggled, going 1 for 10 from the field.
Last season, Bentil averaged 21.1 points and 7.7 rebounds and made 32.9 percent of his 3-point attempts for the Friars.
