The Indiana Pacers signed former Celtics draft pick and Providence forward Ben Bentil on Monday, then waived him later in the day. He’s expected to join the Pacers’ D-League team in Fort Wayne.

Boston selected Bentil with the 51st overall pick of last June’s draft, but he was always a long shot to make the final roster due to the Celtics’ depth.

The Celtics signed Bentil to a three-year deal with a $250,000 guarantee this season, essentially hoping he would join the team’s D-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. Before being waived last week, Bentil appeared open to that idea, saying he was eager to reunite with the other former Celtics on that team, and to continue to develop within the franchise’s system.

But after Bentil was waived, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said that Bentil would seek to sign with a team that offered a clearer path to making the final roster.
