The arraignment of Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird on charges stemming from an alleged domestic assault was delayed Monday as he continued to receive a medical evaluation at a local hospital.
Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office had initially said that Bird, 24, was expected to be arraigned Monday in Brighton Municipal Court. But Conley’s spokesman confirmed late Monday afternoon that Bird would not make his court appearance before the close of business.
It wasn’t clear when he’ll be released from the hospital for booking and arraignment.
He faces charges stemming from a “domestic incident” in which he allegedly assaulted, choked, and kidnapped a person on Friday, according to Boston police.

On Saturday, Bird was taken to a hospital for an “evaluation” that remained ongoing as of Monday, according to police. Once his release is approved by doctors, police will pick him up at the hospital, book him on the charges, and bring him to Brighton Municipal Court, they said.
Citing a state law that bars police from disclosing most details of an alleged incident of domestic violence, police have declined to disclose where Bird was arrested or release any information about the alleged victim.
Conley’s office said the accuser had a romantic relationship with Bird.
Over the weekend, Celtics officials said they were investigating the incident and “taking it very seriously.”
“We are actively gathering information and will reserve further comment at this time,” they wrote in a statement on Saturday.
The Celtics selected Bird with the 56th overall pick of the 2017 draft and last season he signed a one-year, two-way contract and spent most of the season with the team’s G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.
He averaged 19.3 points per game in Maine, and averaged 3 points and 1.5 rebounds over 13 games with the Celtics. A

Bird had a strong summer league showing in Las Vegas in July, averaging 16.8 points on 57 percent shooting, and he ultimately secured the team’s final roster spot by signing a two-year, $3 million minimum contract, with the first year fully guaranteed at $1.55 million. The second season is non-guaranteed.
In the Brighton case, he faces charges of domestic assault and battery, strangulation, and kidnapping, according to Boston police. The victim was taken to a separate local hospital “for treatment with injuries sustained,” police have said.
