College hockey roundup: Yale hands Harvard first loss

Yale scored three third-period goals to pull away from Harvard, 5-1, Saturday night in Cambridge, handing the 13th-ranked Crimson their first loss of the season.

Kenny Agostino potted two of the scores in the final 20 minutes to go along with an assist, Jesse Root scored twice earlier, and Jeff Malcolm stopped 29 shots for the Bulldogs (2-1-1, 1-1-0 ECAC).

Trent Ruffolo scored Yale's other goal on a power play, and Andrew Miller notched three assists for the ultra-aggressive Bulldogs, who put 49 shots on Crimson goalie Raphael Girard.

Harvard (2-1-0, 1-1-0) got a first-period strike from Kyle Criscuolo to knot the game at 1 after Root's goal three minutes into the game opened the scoring.

The Crimson power play, ranked first in the nation last season, was fruitless on four chances.

BU 4, North Dakota 2 — The 12th-ranked Terriers trailed, 2-1, in the third before scoring three times in the final 5:21 to win at fifth-ranked North Dakota (3-2-1).

Matti Nieto tied the game with at 14:39 of the final period, Matt Lane grabbed the lead with a goal almost four minutes later, and Danny O'Regan capped the scoring 11 seconds after.

BU improved to 4-2-0 a night after losing by the same score in Grand Forks, where it had never won in seven chances before Saturday and where North Dakota had not lost in 12 games.

Vermont 2, Providence 0 — Matt White and H.T. Lenz scored and Brody Hoffman made 24 stops for the Catamounts (1-2-2, 1-2-2 Hockey East), who blanked the visiting Friars (4-3-1, 3-2-0).

Dartmouth 2, Brown 1 — Eric Robinson scored with just under six minutes left to lift the host Big Green (3-0-1, 2-0-0 ECAC) past the Bears (1-3-0, 0-2-0).

Bentley 5, Robert Morris 4 — Steve Weinstein scored twice as the Falcons (3-3-0, 2-1-0 Atlantic Hockey) edged the host Colonials (3-3-0, 2-2-0).

Niagara 5, UConn 0 — Garrett Bartus had 36 saves, but the host Purple Eagles (4-2-3, 3-0-0 Atlantic Hockey) beat the Huskies (0-4-1, 0-3-0).

Mercyhurst 3, Sacred Heart 1 — Nick Curry's goal was the lone score for the host Pioneers (0-6-1, 0-4-1).

Women

BC 5, BU 5 — Louise Warren had her first hat trick for the No. 3 Terriers (7-2-1, 3-1-1 Hockey East) and Blake Bolden scored twice for the No. 8 Eagles (3-3-1, 2-2-1) in a deadlock at Chestnut Hill.

Northeastern 9, UConn 1 — Casey Pickett potted four goals and an assist, Kendall Coyne had one goal and four assists, and seventh-ranked NU (7-1-1, 3-1-0 Hockey East) blasted visiting UConn (2-8-1, 1-3-0).

Providence 5, Maine 1 — The visiting Friars (6-3-1, 4-0-0 Hockey East) dropped the Black Bears (1-7-0, 1-5-0) behind a pair of goals from Haley Frade.

Harvard 4, Yale 0 — Jillian Dempsey scored twice in support of the sixth-ranked Crimson (4-0-0, 4-0-0 ECAC), who shut out the host Bulldogs (1-5-0, 1-3-0).
