Football roundup: Abp. Williams loses stunner

Perhaps looking forward to next week’s showdown at St. Mary’s, host Archbishop Williams was stunned by previously winless Arlington Catholic, 36-18, Saturday. They weren’t alone. With a chance to keep its playoff hopes alive, Cardinal Spellman fell to Bishop Fenwick Saturday night, 44-28.

The good news for the Bishops (2-1 league, 5-2 overall) is the defeat does not end their playoff hopes. A win over St. Mary’s Saturday and a victory over Cardinal Spellman on Thanksgiving Eve would still clinch the Catholic Central Large. But Spellman’s loss means it’s no longer a three-team race. Cardinal Spellman (4-4, 1-2) is out of the chase and a busy weekend ends with St. Mary’s the lone conference unbeaten at 4-0.

At the start, it didn’t look like an AC upset was in the making. After Bishops quarterback Pat McAleney hooked up with Jason Pekkinen for a 29-yard touchdown and a quick 6-0 lead, Arlington Catholic scored the next 21 points.

J.P. Whalen heaved touchdown strikes of 12 and 13 yards, and J.D. Dall scampered in from 6 yards for a 21-6 edge.

A 61-yard touchdown run from Kylan Philbert-Richardson and a 33-yard scoring pass by McAleney cut the lead to 21-18 at the half, but the Cougars (1-8) put the game away in the second half with a 6-yard Dall run and an 8-yard rush from Wyatt Wolverton.

As for Spellman, the Cardinals were beaten by a Bishop Fenwick offense led by quarterback Fran Hannon, who was 14 of 20 for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Rufus Rushins ran for 113 yards and three TDs.
