The first round of the Division 1 North boys’ soccer tournament pitted two shorthanded city teams against each other.
East Boston and Brighton were both missing four star seniors because of the SATs. Despite the circumstances, East Boston came out on top, winning, 4-0, on Saturday to advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal round.
“We lost 5-0 to them [earlier in the season] and I felt like we got mugged,’’ said Jets coach Lorenzo Di Benedetto. “We opened the field, used our speed, and maneuvered the ball to secure a win. The game was really well played, I felt like we had an extra zip.”
Jets sophomore midfielder Bernard Xhullima scored the first goal, tucking the ball into the lower left corner. Xhullima assisted on a goal by senior forward Marvin Melgar 10 minutes later. Senior forward Juan Restrepo also scored for the Jets.
