2016 Girls’ Track and Field All-Scholastics
Brooke-Lynn Williams, Norton, junior
Williams proved once again she’s the fastest sprinter in the state. The junior won the 100 at the State Coaches, Division 4, and All-State meets. She also won the 200 at the Division 4 meet and was second at All-States.
Cynthia Aroke, Peabody, senior
One of the top hurdlers in the state, Aroke won the 400 hurdles at the All-State meet in 1:02.68. The NEC All-Star also finished second in the 100 hurdles at All-States and won the 100 hurdles at the Division 1 meet.
Skylar Barthelmes, Dartmouth, senior
Barthelmes had another All-Scholastic season. During indoor season she was the state shot put champion. This spring she won the All-State title in the discus at 135-10. She also won the shot put title at the Division 2 meet.
Margie Cullen, Needham, senior
After winning the mile and 2-mile titles during the indoor season, Cullen moved outdoors and dominated the 2-mile. She won the All-State title and the Division 1 meet. A National Honor Society student, Cullen will attend Georgetown.
Brianna Duncan, Cambridge, senior
In a school with a history of great track names, Duncan may just be the best ever. She finished her career with nine individual All-State titles. At the Division 1 meet, she won the 100, long jump, and the triple jump.
Sarah Edwards, Bellingham, senior
Edwards started the year as the Globe’s Division 2 cross-country Runner of the Year and finished it as a state outdoor champion. Edwards won the 800 at the All-State meet as well as the Division 4 and State Coaches meets.
Chloe Eressy, Dennis-Yarmouth, junior
The Atlantic Coast League All-Star proved to be the top shot put athlete in Eastern Massachusetts. At the All-State meet she finished second in 41-0. She also won the Division 4 title with a throw of 40-4.
Caitlyn Halloran, Hopkinton, sophomore
After finishing first in the Division 3 pentathlon with a meet record 2,955 score, Halloran went on to win the All-State meet with another record of 3,028. She was also named the Outstanding Athlete at the Freshman-Sophomore meet.
Ashley Lewis, Latin Academy, senior
After earning All-Scholastic honors indoors in the 600, Lewis appears again after claiming titles at the Boston City League meet as well as the state championship in the 400. She is also a Globe Scholar-Athlete.
Natalia Phillip, New Mission, senior
Phillip was a double winner in the discus and shot put at the Boston City League meet as well as the Division 4 meet. Ranked No. 2 in her class, the team captain and class valedictorian will attend Bryn Mawr College.
Rachel Sessa, Tewksbury, sophomore
Sessa won the All-State mile title, finishing in 4:53.94. The MVC All-Conference runner also won the Division 3 title. Sessler also set a school record in finishing third in the 1600 at the New England championships.
Madelyn Sessler, Plymouth South, junior
After winning the 55 hurdles All-State title in the indoor season, Sessler stepped outside and won the 100 hurdles at the Division 2 and All-State meets this spring. The Patriot League All-Star ran a 14.78 at the All-State meet.
Julia Valenti, North Reading, senior
A repeat state champion, a repeat All-Scholastic appearance for the talented Hornet senior. Valenti won the pole vault at 12-4 after taking the title at 11-9 as a junior. Also a Globe/Phelps Scholar-Athlete, she will attend Dartmouth.
Devan Walsh, Danvers, senior
Walsh dominated the javelin during the outdoor season for the Falcons. She won the All-State title at 137-4 and also won the Division 3 meet with a throw of 130-5. The Northeastern Conference All-Star will attend Trinity.
Alyssa Zee, Ashland, junior
Zee’s rivalry with Norton’s Brooke-Lynn Williams was one of the highlights of the season. She beat Williams by .02 in the 200 at the state championship. Zee also won the 200 at the State Coaches meet and at New Englands.
4 x 100: Isabelle Winkelman, Rachelle Parker, Anna Jordahl-Henry and Ally Isley (Wellesley)
The team won the Division Relays title in 49.48, the Division 2 title in 49.01, and the All-State title in 48.45. Isley is the senior, and will continue her running career at Williams College. Winkelman is a junior and was the Bay State 100 hurdles champion. Parker is a sophomore and ran the second leg of the relay, and Jordahl-Henry is a freshman who also plays volleyball.
4 x 400: Alexis Belash, Josie Cousineau, and sisters Colette and Elise O’ Leary (Milton)
The Milton girls saved their best for last and won the title at the All-State meet. Belash also runs cross-country and will attend the University of Vermont. Colette and Elise joined Belash in winning the 4 x 800 at the New Englands. Cousineau also plays soccer. Led by this group, Milton won the Division 3 team title.
4 x 800: Emily Bulczynski, Rebecca Grusby, Hannah Fraser and Clare Martin (Newton South)
The Newton South team saved its best for last in winning the All-State title in 9:19.78. The Lions took fourth at the Division 1 meet. Grusby, a senior and headed to Johns Hopkins, is the leader, finishing as a 12-time Dual County League All-Star. Martin, a junior, ran the anchor leg and won the 800 at New Englands. Fraser and Bulczynski are both sophomores and DCL All-Stars.
Coaches of the year
Division 1: Peter Comeau, Andover
Comeau has gone from Andover grad (class of ‘84) to decorated Andover coach. The Golden Warriors finished 6-0 in the Merrimack Valley Conference, then took second in the Division 1 Relays and won the Division 1 state meet.
Division 2: John Griffith, Wellesley
Wellesley was the Bay State Herget champ, finishing 5-0. Led by Griffith, the Raiders then won the Division 2 Relays and the Division 2 state meet. He’s 39-7 over eight years and calls this year’s team his best ever.
Division 3: Thomas Shaw, Milton
Shaw began the school year earning Coach of the Year honors in cross-country and he finishes with an outdoor track honor. Milton was second at the Division 3 Relays but won Division 3 as well as tying for the All-State title.
Division 4: Sotirios Pintzopoulos, North Reading
You could say it’s been a good year for Pintzopoulos. He follows up an indoor season in which he was Division 5 boys’ coach of the year by winning the Division 4 girls honors this spring after capturing the Relays and state meet.

How we picked the team
