    MIAA ALL-STATE CROSS-COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Grace Connolly of Natick coasts to girls’ Division 1 cross-country crown

GARDNER — Natick’s Grace Connolly let her competition know from the jump that Saturday’s Division 1 All-State girls’ cross-country meet was hers to lose. The sophomore led from start to finish over 5 kilometers en route to taking the title in 18:27.

“[My lead] just grew,” Connolly said. “I would hear coaches just telling me consistently, ‘Oh they’re 200 meters behind you,’ so that’s how I knew. No one really challenged me at first.”

Connolly added that at the 2-mile mark, she knew the race was hers.

“We came up this first hill and I looked when I came around the turn, and they were pretty far behind me,” she said. “I knew I just had to keep my pace. I knew they could come up at any time, but I just focused on my splits at that point.”

Connolly beat out Margot Ehrenthrol of Concord-Carlisle (19:25) by 58 seconds. Sophia Jacobs-Towns of Amherst-Pelham was third in 19:30, and Nicole Clermont of Franklin was fourth in 19:36. Lexington took the Division 1 state title with 87 points, followed by Lowell (158) and Woburn (196).

In the Division 2 race, Bridget Mitchell’s first-place finish of 19:15 helped her Milton squad to a team title (48 points). Milton placed four runners in the top 20, including Elise O’Leary (seventh, 19:37), Ella Affanato (ninth, 19:40), and Colette O’Leary (19th, 20:08).

Westwood’s Ashley Walker (19:24) and Wayland’s Sarah Tully (19:28) were second and third.

Milton coach Tom Shaw knew the race would likely come down to his squad and Tewksbury (second place, 84 points). He explained that he used the results from last week’s Eastern Mass. championship to gauge which Tewksbury girls his runners should match up with.

Milton made a habit of running and finishing in packs all season, and Shaw said that it’s all about teamwork.

“It’s more about supporting your teammates,” Shaw said. “Every race is different. Wherever you are in the race, look around for your teammates, and be there to support them.”

Lenox Memorial took third (101), followed by Hamilton-Wenham (199).
